Top 16 Films of 2016

Last few years I've looked at the Top 14 for 2014 and the Top 15 Films of 2015, and I show the results in January, but now I want to look at what I think will be the best genre films of 2016.

Who is they?
Their prediction comes from Hollywood Stock Exchange as of Dec 25/15, while HSX is a game, it's a game that does well at predicting the box-office results of Hollywood films. I don't always agree and that's how I earn H$ in the game. All dollar amounts are in Millions ($62.44 = $62,440,000)

1) Star Wars: Rogue Squadron $315 - Opening the same weekend as the incredibly well performing Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this film gets the benefit of two more weekend days in 2016. I am basing this prediction strictly on the 2016 calendar year. If Marvel's Captain America and Warner's Batman v Superman do the numbers I predict, this is going to be a very tight race. The film overall I think will make close to $400.

2) Captain America: Civil War $314 - A great cast and a story that the fans are all behind and this film could actually do a lot more. Age of Ultron did $459 and Batman v Superman is 6 weeks before and will have died down in the box office by then.

3) Batman v Superman $305 - Warner Bros. are placing big hopes on this film launching a cinematic universe akin to Marvel. I really don't think they have the vision and planning in place to make this happen and I think the top heavy cast of this film is part of the reason. Comic book movies work best in a trimmed cast situation. Throw more at it and it's harder to follow.

4) X-Men: Apocalypse $230 - Following from what I said about Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman, too big of a cast. Being a little later in the year than the other could be a blessing for this film's opening weekend, it is Memorial Day in the USA.

5) Finding Dory $223 - The return of some of Pixar's most beloved characters, right at the end of the school year, will give this film legs. It should have a good opening weekend followed by a long run at the boxoffice.

6) Star Trek: Beyond $204 - The first trailer out for this film didn't wow audiences but I have faith in JJ Abrams as a producer and Simon Pegg as a writer. I expect that this film will excite audiences where Ghostbusters the week before won't.

7) Suicide Squad $189 - The second DC film of 2016 and if Batman v Superman bombs, then so will this. People already don't like the look of the film and its characters. The only saving grace this film has is that its going to be a slow August.

8) Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them $184 - Set in New York 70 years before Harry and his friends arrive at Hogwarts. This film continues the JK Rowling Universe as the first of three in this series.

9) The Jungle Book $150 - Disney's live-action take on their 1967 animated film, based on the works of Rudyard Kipling. There are a whole slew of related films to come, like Tarzan and Jungle Book: Origins (Warner Bros 2017).

10) Secret Life of Pets $150 - From the studio that brought us Despicable Me and Minions, a story about what our pets get up to when we're away.

11) Independence Day: Resurgence $148 - The aliens that kicked our ass in 1996 come back for a second helping.

12) Deadpool $135 - I wouldn't be surprised if this sassy valentines weekend film out does my prediction.

13) Doctor Strange $132 - Marvel's November release pulls the Master of Mysticism from comic book pages and into the lineup for the next Avengers film.

14) Warcraft $130 - This film's box-office numbers almost seem too low for the amount of time that went into making it. With a film based on a game that has 5.5 Million active players, you'd think you could get more than $24 per player out of them, or are they to busy buying Blood Spirits?

15) Kung Fu Panda $129 - January is just a bad time for films that aren't Oscar contenders.

16) Zootopia $128 - Disney may score well with this animated featre that sits between Deadpool and Batman v Superman.
